All of the publishing history I use on this blog comes from the work of Walter and Jean Shine, specifically their 1988 publication A MACDONALD POTPOURRI. They obtained their info, where available, directly from the publishers. According to Wikipedia the current parent company of Popular (which is now defunct) is the Hachette Book Group. I would guess the company's records would reside with them.Steve Scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15863138617383626261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290476670691353414.post-90733475607704450112021-04-08T06:06:34.091-07:002021-04-08T06:06:34.091-07:00Hi,

One correction, I believe Ray Johnson did do another JDM cover at Popular, "You Live Once" #737, which is a thing of beauty. Sadly, Popular reprinted it as G507 with the title "You Kill Me" and only half the illustration, with all the beautiful highlights of the girl washed out:( .

Incidentally, I was wondering where you got the publishing information for Popular Library? I am working on a biographical piece on Ray Johnson, who is considered a great "mystery man" of the PB artists because there is so little known about him even though he did many hundreds of covers, including about 200 for Popular Library. I think finding out more about where Popular was getting their artwork done and engraved and printed might give me confirmation on some clues I already have. Any help would be highly appreciated.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02696663923851058493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290476670691353414.post-54458783709465524642019-02-05T11:50:52.084-08:002019-02-05T11:50:52.084-08:00Thanks Fred, that's good to hear. As he noted, big chunks of dialogue were taken directly from the book, and it's one of the best, if not the best, adaption of a JDM novel I've seen. I had the two-parter on videotape which I recorded myself, long-gone now, and keep hoping to find a viewable DVD version (so far having no luck after spending in the low three figures for various bootlegs)Fred@Dreamtimehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12341564329610259477noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290476670691353414.post-51427813314149242192013-02-15T14:23:40.684-08:002013-02-15T14:23:40.684-08:00Steve, I'm not a cover art expert either. According to them, all your info about McGinnis' covers and editions are correct, as is the unknown identity of the creator of D1739.Steve Scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15863138617383626261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290476670691353414.post-62226362491561571862013-02-12T18:30:27.433-08:002013-02-12T18:30:27.433-08:00Hi Steve. I said: "McGinnis did the cover for Gold Medal “Cry Hard, Cry Fast”, but not this one. He did M2906, P3510, 3969 and 12634. The cover art for D1739 was used again in 1969 on R2046 and the artist is unknown." As I subsequently explained to Chris, I am NOT a McGinnis cover art expert. I got all my info from "The Paperback Covers of Robert McGinnis" by Art Scott and Dr Wallace Maynard. Thoughts, comments or sources for the argument supporting McGinnis?
Cheers, Steve Wallaceukemonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16076858108645119350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290476670691353414.post-53005963524765171562012-09-19T05:43:57.593-07:002012-09-19T05:43:57.593-07:00Thanks Steve. I'm not a super serious collector of primo condition early editions, but I do like the covers and to read earlier editions if I can get my hands on them. I did manage to get a nice clean copy of the 1958 second edition, which I look forward to reading.

By the way, have you ever heard of an anthology of seven complete novels of JDM, all from the early 50s? I tried to buy a copy from a seller on Amazon, but it had apparently been sold and my money was returned. I have not come across any other references to such an anthology.

Many thanks for your informative blog.Steve Wellmeierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17494750550653572290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290476670691353414.post-6876431925258700292011-05-15T02:16:40.675-07:002011-05-15T02:16:40.675-07:00The recent Blogspot outage deleted the following c...The recent Blogspot outage deleted the following comment, posted on May 12.
